Party Policies

The SNP has one paragraph on animal protection on page 18.

It says that, as animal welfare is devolved to the Scottish government, the SNP is already:

  • ‘working to improve the conditions of kept animals including consultations on dog ownership and wild animals in travelling circuses’
  • ‘giving consideration to further protection at slaughter’
  • considering the ‘registration or licensing of horse establishments’
  • considering ‘a review of tail docking in working dogs’ – this could mean allowing working dogs to have their tails docked, which the shooting industry has lobbied for

And in the future the SNP will:

  • ‘support further animal welfare measures with a global focus’ including ‘actions to end the illegal ivory trade and protect species such as polar bears and Bluefin tuna’
